This piece shows a dummy coming to life, experiencing an increasing range of movement and emotions. As it escapes from its mechanical identity and explores its newfound freedom, we are reminded what makes us human: joy, humor and love.

Dear Nadezhda

In 2014, Mr. Petrov brought Dear Nadezhda back to dance, classical music and history lovers. The ballet was performed on a double bill together with the Tchaikovsky Opera "The Queen of Spades" in New York City.

Nadezhda von Meck was a widowed Russian railroad baroness who devoted much of her wealth and energy to supporting the arts. Upon hearing Tchaikovsky’s music for the first time, she was enthralled, having discovered a mirror for her own emotions in his work. Thus began a platonic love affair that evolved through over 600 letters; hence the title, Dear Nadezhda.

Set to various works by Tchaikovsky—some of which have been rarely heard—Mr. Petrov’s choreography demonstrates how love, longing, and emotional unity can exist between a man and a woman on a purely spiritual level. Always staying within the classical vocabulary, his ballet brings excitement and innovation to this established style of dance.

Venti Petrov

El Cid

A two-act story ballet based on original music by Jules Massenet. El Cid lived a thousand years ago and inspired generations of writers, poets, playwrights and cinematographers. For the first time, Venti Petrov has taken up the challenge of creating a classical ballet based on this heroic character. The work elegantly combines a gripping story, a unique musical score, and beautiful choreography.
